Programme Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy in Social Science program is designed to provide knowledge on how to conduct research on a chosen topic using credible academic sources. The aspirants will be taught how to find, review, assess, and analyze information, as well as how to reach fresh findings, under the supervision of their academic supervisor. The degree is offered in English through Open Distance Learning (ODL) mode.

The course gives students the chance to thoroughly investigate a subject of interest and produce a thesis in the field of Social Science. Graduates will have the chance to develop their ability to design cutting-edge research methodologies, develop social conscience, and influence academic and professional practice on issues related to the field of Social Science.

For a successful completion of the PhD degree at LUC, each candidate should publish a minimum of four research articles in Scopus-indexed journals with Lincoln affiliation.

i. A Master’s Degree [Level 7, Malaysian Qualifications Framework (MQF)] in Social Sciences disciplines accepted by the Higher Education Provider Lincoln university college Senate; or

ii. Other qualifications equivalent to a Master’s Degree (Level 7, MQF) recognised by the Government of Malaysia.

iii. Candidates without a related qualification in the field/s or working experience in the relevant fields must undergo appropriate prerequisite courses determined by the Lincoln university college Senate.

A Bachelor’s Degree (Level 6, MQF) with the following conditions:
i. A Bachelor’s Degree (Level 6 MQF) in the field or related fields with first-class [Cumulative Grade Point of Average (CGPA) of 3.67 or higher] or its equivalent from an academic or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme;

ii. Undergo internal assessment; and

iii. Any other requirements of the Lincoln university college Senate.

Bachelor’s Degree (Level 6, MQF) candidates who are registered for Master’s Degree (Level 7, MQF) programmes may apply to convert to the Doctoral Degree (Level 8, MQF) programmes subjected to the following conditions:

i. Within one year for full time and within two years for part-time candidates;

ii. Having shown competency and capability in conducting research at Doctoral level through rigorous internal evaluation by the Lincoln university college Senate; and

iii. Approval of the Lincoln university college Senate.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Social Science degree is beneficial in many fields. It may result in employment in either the public or private sector. The course intend to prepare the candidates to be:

  1. Knowledgeable and skilled in the theory and practice of areas of Social Sciences studies with the concept of research work.
  2. Competent to practice technically and process interpersonal skills for communication in various situations and responsibilities in the course of their research work.
  3. Capable of working ethically and protruding personal skills as well as digital skills to lend support to Social Sciences work in their specialty.
  4. Confident to show adequate leadership skills and responsibilities with excellent numeracy skills that are useful for industrial needs and in the field of Social Sciences.

Able to demonstrate entrepreneurial skills in specialties under Anthropology, Communication Studies, Economics, Education, Geography, History, Law, Linguistics, Political Science, Sociology, Library Science, Environmental Studies, Development Studies, Computational Social Science, Behavioural Sciences, International Relations, Psychology, Public Relations, Social Work, and Public Administration.
