Programme Overview

Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing program is designed for students to conduct research in the field of Nursing Sciences. The students will be able to do interdisciplinary research related to the fields of nursing. It will be convenience for the students to pursue their independent research work through our specialized and well-equipped laboratories. Our University College is highly supported by qualified and experience academic staff.

This program is intended for students, who wish to advance their studies in this relevant discipline of study in nursing.

For successful completion of PhD degree in Lincoln University College, each candidate need to publish minimum of two (2) research articles in scopus indexed journals and two (2) other indexed International Journals, with Lincoln University College affiliation.

Entry Requirements :

i. Master of Nursing or Allied Science or related fields (Level 7, MQF) as accepted by Lincoln University College
Senate, or
ii.Other qualifications equivalent to a Master`s Degree (Level 7, MQF) that are accepted by Lincoln University

A minimum score of 550 in TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or

Program Overview
What is the aim of the PhD in Nursing program?

Full-Time Study: 3 years

Part-Time Study: 4 – 8 years

Three intakes per year i.e., in March, July & November.

Field of research is nursing with vary widely specialization including clinical nursing, mental health, nursing education, public health, and healthcare policy.

The Master of Nursing (Midwifery) program includes a range of practical experiences tailored to each specialization. This includes clinical placements in hospitals and community settings, where students provide care during pregnancy, labor and postpartum. They gain direct experience in managing childbirth and supporting families.

The clinical practice (practicum) duration for the Master of Nursing (Midwifery) is typically 6 months, or approximately 26 weeks, for each specialization. Six months (26 weeks) of clinical placements providing hands-on care during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum.

If you fail the practicum in the Master of Nursing (Midwifery) program, you will receive detailed feedback on your performance, highlighting areas for improvement. Many programs offer a remediation plan that may include additional training, coursework, or another opportunity to complete the practicum. You may also have the chance to retake the practicum after fulfilling the necessary remediation requirements. It is important to meet with an academic advisor to discuss your options and develop a plan moving forward.

Yes, you can defer a semester at Lincoln University College (LUC), but you must follow the university’s deferral process:

  1. Submit a Formal Request: You need to submit a deferral request to the university, stating the reasons for deferring.
  2. Approval Required: The deferral must be approved by the university administration, and valid reasons such as medical issues, financial difficulties, or personal circumstances may be required.
  3. Duration: The deferral is usually granted for one semester but can vary based on your situation and university policies.
  4. Impact on Visa: For international students, deferring a semester may impact your student visa, so you must check with the INSO Office.

Ensure you communicate early with the Student Affairs Office or your academic advisor for guidance on the deferral process.

At Lincoln University College (LUC), you are allowed to defer up to two consecutive semesters in a row, but this may vary depending on your circumstances and program requirements. However, no more than two or three semesters deferment throughout the duration of the program will be allowed.

Extended deferrals may require additional justification and approval from the university administration.

Entry Requirements
What are the eligibility criteria for admission into the PhD in Nursing program?

To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

 Local Applicants:

(i)         Master of Nursing or Allied Sciences or related fields (Level 7, MMQF) and accepted by Lincoln University College Senate.

(ii)        Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree (Level 7, MQF) accepted by the Lincoln University College Senate.

 International Applicants:

(i)         Master of Nursing or Allied Sciences or related fields (Level 7, MMQF) as accepted by Lincoln University College Senate.

(ii)        Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree (Level 7, MQF) accepted by the Lincoln University College Senate.

(iii)      Achieved the minimum English proficiency requirement.

·      A minimum score of 60 in TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or 5.5 in IELTS (International English Language Testing System).

  • Yes, IELTS or TOEFL is mandatory for all international applicants.

Note: 

IELTS or TOEFL may not be required if:

  • The applicant can provide a supporting letter/certificate issued by the previous school/institution to certify the applicant has completed his/her education in the English medium of instruction.
  • The applicant is from an English-speaking country.

    • You should provide a supporting letter as evidence of your working experiences in nursing practice.
    • The terms and conditions are based on LUC Senate approval.

Master of Nursing or Allied Sciences or related field (Level 7 MQF) as accepted by Lincoln University College Senate

Yes, qualifications recognized as equivalent by the Malaysian government are accepted.

Students can register on the date specified in their conditional offer letter (COL) within 30 days after issuance of the COL, the date vary according to the intake schedule.

No credit transfer for any courses by research

You can upload and submit the required documents online, but registration only can be done after EMGS approval and candidate has to attend physically at LUC. 

Yes, it is allowed.  

Yes, you are eligible through the APEL (Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning) pathway, which has been approved by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) for Lincoln University College. Your relevant work experience can be assessed and recognized for entry into a PhD in Nursing program.

You have to take APEL assessment, and we will check your working experience if it fits the entry qualification you can join.

Teaching /Learning /Assessment
What subjects are covered in the program?

Compulsory for students in Semesters 1 & 2 to take three (3) Coursework courses, namely: Advanced Research Methodology, Research Methodology, and Computer Applications

Our PhD in Nursing program graduates will develop key skills, including advanced research skills, critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and expertise in their chosen nursing specialization.

Computer application and data analysis

  1. Students will be assessed through presentations and assignments for the mandatory subjects in Semesters 1 & 2 included Advanced Research Methodology, Research Methodology, and Computer Applications.
  2. Students have to defend their research proposal at Internal examiners.
  3. Students submit thesis for Viva with Internal and External Examiners.

Research supervisors were assigned based on their expertise and publication records. It is advisable to contact with your faculty to discuss your research interests before applying.

Attendance Policy
What is the minimum attendance requirement for the semester?

LUC requires students to maintain at least 80% attendance in each subject.

If your attendance falls below the required minimum, you may not be eligible for visa renewal.

Yes, exceptions may be made for valid medical reasons, participation in university-sanctioned events, or other documented emergencies. Supporting documents must be submitted to the relevant department for approval.

In some cases, students may be allowed to attend makeup sessions to improve their attendance. This depends on availability of your supervisors and lecturers. 

Attendance is usually recorded in the attendance list, log book and progress report of your research.

Yes, you can request a leave of absence for personal reasons by submitting a formal request to the academic office. Make sure to check the institution’s leave policy and provide appropriate documentation.

To avoid penalties, it is important to plan your schedule well, attend all classes regularly, and notify your instructors in advance if you have any unavoidable absences.
