Programme Overview

The Master of Science in Dentistry under the Faculty of Dentistry is designed to provide the students the basic education needed to become a dental practitioner while introducing a unique course education system and to promote the development of a new academic discipline for dental medicine as a leader of oral health science. The student will get hands on working experience to get knowledge on their preferred area of choice. After completing the program they may specialize within a particular area of dentistry for example orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, periodontics, or prosthodontics programs for research at a Doctorate level. Current employment trends reveal a growing need for qualified dental professionals in response to a rising demand for dental services. Dentistry provides a rewarding and diverse career path and is a health profession concerned with caring for people of all ages. The students can pursue public sector dental health, hospital dental clinics, international health care and the research industry.

Entry Requirements :

1. Bachelor’s Degree (Level 6, MQF) in Dentistry with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent, as received by the Lincoln University Senate; Or

2. Bachelor’s Degree (Level 6, MQF) in Dental field or equivalent to getting a minimum CGPA of 2.50 and not achieving CGPA of 2.75, can be admitted depending on a neat internal assessment; Or

3. Bachelor’s Degree (Level 6, MQF) in Dental field or its equivalent but does not reach CGPA 2.50, admitted to be subject to a minimum of 5 years working experience in relevant fields.

English Requirements :
International students must have proof of good proficiency in verbal and written English. For example, International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.0 or its equivalent. If a student does not meet this requirement, HEPs must offer English proficiency courses to ensure that the student’s proficiency is sufficient to meet the needs of the programme.

Owing to the increasing dental problems in the country, Master of Science in Dentistry is in great demand. Besides, more and more people have now become conscious about their looks and consult dentists for cosmetic correction of their teeth. This has led to the prosperity in the field of dentistry. This has enhanced the range and significance of a professional degree in the discipline. In the light of increasing incidents of various dental disorders, the necessity of dentists is growing fast. Liberalization of economy has opened better opportunities for these professionals in terms of remuneration, research and working facilities. Outstanding employment opportunities are obtainable for dental professionals in hospitals, nursing homes, dental clinics and health departments. Apart from this, as a dentist the students can work in research and advisory departments of pharmaceuticals. Opportunities are there in companies producing oral care products like toothpaste, mouth wash, and gum care products. Self-employment is also a promising avenue. With experience, the student can start own individual clinic for financial prospects along with a greater level of independence. So there is good scope for dental professionals abroad with lot of career opportunities available worldwide.

The program of Master of Science in Dentistry will produce graduates who are,

Program Overview
Does the MSc in Dentistry program have MQA accreditation?

Yes, our MSc in Dentistry program has received accreditation from the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

The typical duration for our MSc in Dentistry Program (full time) is 2 years and part time is 4 years.

Yes, we do! Every student is assigned a mentor as part of our mentor-mentee program. Your mentor will guide you throughout your academic journey, providing support in both academic and personal development. These sessions are designed to help you navigate challenges, set goals, and make the most of your time in medical school.

As an international candidate you cannot apply for an Annual Practicing License at the MDC. However, if you obtain a job at any Malaysian Institute/Clinic, the employer will assist you in obtaining a Temporary Practicing certificate on your behalf.

After the MSc program, you can enroll in the PhD program at LUC or any other university worldwide.

The university has a Student Representative Council (SRC) which allows the students to discuss their issues among themselves and bring it to the management for solution. The Faculty of Dentistry also has a strong alumni group which will help the students to grow personally during and after the completion of the study program.

The MSc program has a three intakes every year (March, July & November) . The intake following your application date will apply to you.

Recommendation letters are not required for joining the MSc program. Academic transcripts signifying the eligibility of the candidate is sufficient to join the MSc program.

A short interview/aptitude test will be conducted by the faculty of dentistry to determine the candidate’s aptitude for pursuing the MSc program. Candidates with CGPA between 2.5 – 2.75 have to compulsorily take up and entrance test to determine eligibility for admission.

Career Prospects
After completing the MSc program, what options do I have?

After completion of the MSc program, you can apply for a PhD degree at LUC or other universities across the world or work as lecturer in any dental specialist department or researcher in any research center.

Credit Transfer
After joining MSc program, can I transfer to other program or university?

LUC allows transfer to other programs offered by the university provided the candidate attains eligibility for that program. This is achieved by transfer of credits from the departing program to the program the candidate wishes to join. Transfer to another university is possible but is very complicated and dependent on a number of factors based on the ministry of higher education and Malaysian qualification agency.

Future Prospects
After my DDS program, what are the options I can pursue in Malaysia?

After the DDS program, you can enroll in the MSc program at LUC or any other university in Malaysia.

Career Prospects
As a foreigner, will I be allowed to practice dentistry after completed?

International students are not eligible to practice dentistry in Malaysia. So international students can return to their home countries or apply for licensure qualification examination in countries like USA, Australia, UK etc. LUC will help the students in orienting them for these examinations.

Local students will have to compulsorily work as an intern at Government Hospitals in Malaysia as part of internship for a minimum duration of 1 year. Following the internship, some students may be given an opportunity to continue their job while others can join private dental clinics as locum or setup their own practice. For international students, they have to return to their home country for completion of internship. International dentists can work in Malaysia only if they have an employment contract from public or private institutions.

Entry Requirements
What are the basic requirements for joining the DDS program?

As an international student, you will have to submit transcripts for your bachelors in dentistry degree from your home country. If your transcripts are in local language. You have to translate it into English language and get it attested by notary or government agency.

Part time MSc in dentistry is available only to Malaysian applicants. For international applicants the program is compulsorily full time.

The MSc program has a three intakes per year (march, July and November). You can apply for admission at any time of the year to get admission for the nearest intake.

If your CGPA in the Bachelors of dentistry program is less than 2.50, you will have to submit working experience of minimum 5 years in the field of dentistry.

Minimum 5 years working experience in the field of dentistry: As Full-Time Tutor/Lecturer at Recognized Public/Private Universities; As Full-Time Dentist in Public/Private Hospitals;  As Dentist in own Dental Clinic; As Full-Time Dental Workshop Trainer/ Dental Coaching Centers in Dental Academies ( * Provide Registration in Local Dental Council & Work Experience Certificate)

Yes, qualifications recognized as equivalent by the Malaysian government are accepted.

English Proficiency
What are the language requirements for international students?

International applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of English proficiency. This is commonly done through TOEFL or IELTS scores. The minimum required TOEFL score is typically around 90 (internet-based test), and the IELTS minimum is around 5.
