Renal nursing is a specialized area of nursing practice to treats patients with kidney disease and educates both patients and families about treatment protocols. The programme, Post Basic Renal Care Nursing, aims to produce competent, knowledgeable and professional nurses with a better understanding of the patients across the spectrum of renal care, causes and treatment of the disease and the psycho-social implications of renal disease.

Renal nursing is a specialized area of nursing practice to treats patients with kidney disease and educates both patients and families about treatment protocols. The programme, Post Basic Renal Care Nursing, aims to produce competent, knowledgeable and professional nurses with a better understanding of the patients across the spectrum of renal care, causes and treatment of the disease and the psycho-social implications of renal disease. It prepares them to compete in present competitive global as well as local market.

Program Aim

  1. Develop student’s understanding of the underpinning pathophysiology of acute and chronic renal diseases and the aetiological factors which may contribute to the development of renal conditions/diseases within local, national and international populations.
  2. Facilitate students to critically reflect on current practice, identify areas for improvement and apply the evidence base to propose changes to patient care.
  3. Analyse the complex needs of renal patients within the context of changing healthcare provision with the use of evidence in practice.
  4. Analyse current national and local policy along with Government and renal organisation guidelines to design frameworks and best practices for the identification, treatment and management of renal disease.
  5. Facilitate students to identify, assess and evaluate their own learning needs and to construct an action plan to meet these needs with a self-directed learning process.

Career Opportunities

Renal dialysis nurses provide direct patient care to children and adults requiring hemo-dialysis for renal disease in an acute-care setting. A renal dialysis nurse is familiar with kidney disorders, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or substance abuse. The programme has been intended to develop safe, competent and skilled nurses to work independently in terms of knowledge and practical skills to offer nursing care to end Stage Renal failure patient in health care setting. Apart from all these a renal dialysis nurse can get a broad exposure in various domains, such as:
