Overview

The tourism and hospitality industry is a broad category of fields within the service industry that includes lodging, restaurants, event planning, theme parks, transportation, cruise line, and additional fields within the tourism industry. The hospitality industry is a several billion-dollar industries which depends heavily on front liners to deliver the service experience. A hospitality unit such as a restaurant, hotel, or even an amusement park consists of multiple groups such as facility maintenance, direct operations staff, management, marketing, and human resources.

This industry strives to ensure high levels of satisfaction for temporary space to travelers in the form of hotels, resorts, clubs, restaurants, cruise lines, retail, service suites, motels, inns, bed, and breakfast and even home stay which vary in size, function, and cost. Traditional roles in the hospitality industry are visitors’ services, sales, catering, travel operators, front office, and housekeeping. Larger establishment may operate with an extensive management structure consisting of a General Manager who serves as the head executive, department heads who oversee various departments, mid-level managers, administrative staff, and line-level supervisors. Job responsibilities and duties are many and varied.
